Scott Vrabel, Public Education Coordinator for the Peotone (IL) Fire Protection District, provides this guest review of Tom Kiurski’s book Creating a Fire-Safe Community - A Guide for Fire Safety Educators.

Whether you have been in public education ten minutes or ten years, you will gain valuable information from Tom Kiurski’s book, Creating a Fire-Safe Community - A Guide for Fire Safety Educators.

The chapters in this book will help jumpstart a new program or rekindle the spark in an existing one.  Kiurski has narrowed down the vast, confusing realm of Fire Safety presentations down to a reminder of the core ideas and points we all strive to emphasize to audiences of all ages.

In his book, Kiurski covers topics ranging from planning your presentation, basic fire concepts, schools, scouts, adult education, seasonal programs, PSA’s and more.  He also gives useful information on how to create quizzes, handouts, and props to coincide with your presentation.

Tom Kiurski is not only an author; he is well educated in Life Safety Education.  This 27-year veteran of the Livonia, MI fire department is their director of Fire Safety Education. He also has a MBA in Public Administration and Fire and Safety engineering.

From this public educator’s point of view, Creating a Fire-Safe Community - A Guide for Fire Safety Educators is a must-have, whether it’s used to reference a topic, create a program, add new shine to a old one, or use as an emergency reference guide for that last minute request. This is definitely a book that no Life Safety Educator should be without.

Editor’s Note: Thanks to Scott for providing this review.
