Polishing the Kid’s Jr. Fire Academy
June 18th, 2008 | Published in News
For about the past ten years, we have hosted a 2 day Kid’s Jr. Fire Academy that has been a great experience.
In the past, we have offered it to children ages 5 - 10 from the hours of 9:00 - 2:00 with lunch included. It seems that we always fill up quickly and have to turn away a few people each year.
This year, I have decided to divide the academy up into a morning and afternoon session to increase the space available.
Â
In the mornings, we will have Kindergarten - 2nd grade and 3rd - 5th in the afternoon.
Due to the age split and the fact that it is time to review the program and revitalize it, I am taking some time to revamp the program. Possibly add some new activities and tweak others.
Here’s some of what we normally do:
- 911 for Kids
- Getting to Know Firefighters
- Station tour
- All About Fire & Smoke Detectors
- Stop, Drop & Roll
- Home Escape Plans
- Home Hazards
- Engines & Fire Hose
- Ladder Trucks & Ladders
- Search & Rescue
- Kid’s Mini Combat Challenge
Each of these activities has some classroom with hands-on.
If anyone has any other ideas or suggestions for the types of activities that you may have used in your camp/academy, I’d be interested in hearing about them.
Once our program is reconfigured, I’ll post it here for anyone who wants to download a copy.
